Advanced Computing for Sustainable Thermal Management in Industry

AdTherM – Advanced Computing for Sustainable Thermal Management in Industry – is a Vinnova competence centre established in 2024.

Purpose and goal

The Competence centre AdTherM targets analyses of thermal processes in industrial applications, including thermo- and electrochemical energy conversion activities. Most challenges for the industry in this area are generic and based on the same physical mechanisms. To develop this field of research, both experiments and models need to be improved and coordinated. AdTherM is a platform centered around the models and methods used to evaluate, analyze, and develop thermal industrial systems. This includes validation of models against experiments and applied modeling at various length and time scales.

Expected results and effects

AdTherM´s objective is to create, through theoretical and numerical models, a knowledge-based development and design process for next-generation technologies for sustainable energy conversion, heat management, and energy recovery. Academia and industry will together form a strong network, where goal is to build competence and knowledge through an internationally recognized center. The results in the form of increased knowledge and improved models will be usable by the industry to improve its manufacturing processes and products facilitating increased innovation.

Planned approach and implementation

AdTherM´s strategy is to bring together a spectrum of industrial technologies with key roles in the sustainability value chain, and to interdisciplinary bridge the gap between basic research and applications. The jointly identified key challenges will be studied by combining experiments, primarily in industry, with model development and simulation studies, primarily in academia. Validation will establish the modeling accuracy and then the models will be applied to industrially relevant problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the models.

Centre board

The AdTherM Centre Board governs the mutual interest of the partners and decides on the overall strategic direction, as well as yearly objectives. The Board also oversees reporting to Vinnova.
